SOME of Scotland's top golfers will descend upon Gourock Golf Club next week as a local pro seeks to give back to a charity who supported his late mother.

Derek Watters will host a pro-am competition on September 6, the first time the club has hosted such an event in 25 years.

The event has been backed by Derek’s friend and Ardgowan Hospice patron Greg Taylor.

The Celtic left-back was recently named in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for upcoming Nations League ties against Poland and Portugal.

A total of 22 PGA professionals have given up their time to take part in next weekend's tournament.

Derek and his family have organised the event to raise money for Ardgowan Hospice as a thank you for the care staff provided for his mother.

Irene Watters, 75, passed away the hospice in November last year.

She spent several years volunteering for the charity and was involved in launching several projects.

Derek said: “All the staff at the hospice have been absolutely wonderful.

“They’ve taken care of my dad, myself and my brother, so this is just a chance to give something back.

“My mum was very proud of the hospice and everything they did.

“This is the first time I’ve been in here since she passed away.

“It’s difficult coming back in but this is our way of saying thank you for everything they’ve done.”

Taylor told the Tele he was hopeful of attending the pro-am subject to travel arrangements for the fixtures.

He added: “Being good friends with Derek and with it being something that’s so close to the community’s heart, it would be amazing to attend.

“I’ll be there to try support anyway I can before and after as well.”

In addition to the golf, there will be a raffle and auction on the day to help boost the fundraising total.

The raffle will open next week for those wishing to buy tickets.
