INVERCLYDE’S MP has officially resigned from his role as a Gourock councillor following his election to Westminster.

Martin McCluskey has represented the Inverclyde West ward since May 2022.

The Labour councillor was elected as the area’s new MP in July’s general election,  in which his party stormed to a national majority.

Labour’s rules prevent members from holding both posts, meaning he would be required to step down from his council role.

Mr McCluskey wrote to Inverclyde Council’s chief executive Louise Long yesterday to confirm his resignation.

In the letter, he said: “Following my election as Member of Parliament for Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West, I write to you to resign as Councillor for Ward 5 (Inverclyde West), effective from 9am on Wednesday, September 4.

“It has been a privilege to work with you and your team since May 2022.

“The Inverclyde Council workforce that you lead are a credit to our area and I have been proud to work alongside so many of them since my election.

“I look forward to continuing to work with you in the years ahead.”

Mr McCluskey defeated SNP candidate Ronnie Cowan to win the Inverclyde seat in July’s election, securing a majority of more than 6,000 votes.

Mr Cowan had previously served as the area’s MP for nine years.

Speaking after his election, Mr McCluskey said it had been 'an immense privilege' to serve people in Gourock during his time as a councillor.

An Inverclyde Council spokesperson said: “Notification of Cllr McCluskey’s resignation has been received and we have now begun the process of organising a by-election.

“We are in contact with our election contractors and other relevant stakeholders with a view to setting a timetable for the by-election in line with relevant legislation.

“Details will be confirmed as soon as possible.”
