The frontman of Gourock indie band Slix says he is looking forward to playing to a home audience this month.

Robbie Peden said the band, who have enjoyed a summer tour of European festivals, haven't performed in Inverclyde for two years.

The indie group will play at the Beacon as part of the venue's new Indie Inverclyde gig series.

Robbie said: "It’s our first gig at home for two years. We’ve been all over the place so it's nice to come back to our roots.

“It’s our first headliner since March. It’s nice to come back for a more intimate show with friends, family and local fans."

The band, from Gourock, formed in 2018 and have built a huge following, selling out St Luke's and the iconic King Tut’s in Glasgow and playing alongside the Killers at Madcool Festival in Madrid, the WISE Festival in Berlin and Future Echoes in Sweden.

They released their debut EP, 'Jingle Jangle', in 2022, building up a reputation for riotous, energetic performances, helping to establish them as an exciting new band on the UK music scene.

Local fans are also keen to see them when they appear on September 14, with tickets having sold out in less than five minutes.

Robbie, who met bandmates, guitarist Niven Lowrie, bassist Alan Hunter and Ally Terry, at nursery school, also works at the Beacon in the facilities team.

He said: “It really is a homecoming gig. I have been working at the Beacon since I was at college. They have been really supportive and flexible with the band as well.”

“Having a venue where bands can play in Inverclyde is so helpful. This area is really good for music. There are loads of bands, but not many spaces to perform.

"When we were starting out, we had to go to Glasgow. There was no stepping stone locally. This area has always been good for music.

“Indie Inverclyde is a fantastic thing – not just for bands but for people to be able to go out and hear live music on their doorsteps.”

Robbie describes SLIX’s music as “lots of different genres” – encapsulated by their uplifting riotous cover of ABBA’s Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.

He said: “That’s us in a nutshell. We’re not too serious, we’re all best mates.

“We are doing what we love. We were all into music at school, we started jamming together and thought ‘why not give writing a song a bash?’ “It has been hard work, but we keep at it. Our first gig was in Glasgow in front of 30 people, but we’ve kept at it and built up a fanbase.

“It’s a good feeling knowing that someone you have never met is out there, listening to your music and wanting to come and see you play.”

Indie Inverclyde was devised the Beacon’s co-director, Lesley Davidson, who is a keen music fan with a particular passion for indie music from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and is curated by Scott Peden, who runs Take The Weight Off management, which has SLIX on their books.

It offers bands access to a professional performance venue right on their doorstep, supports the music industry and nurtures Scotland’s music talent.

Lesley said: “We are passionate about supporting the creativity and talent in our community and Indie Inverclyde is another way we are getting out there to nurture emerging artists and musicians.

“The music scene in Inverclyde is brimming with possibility and we are proud to offer our venue and our in-house experience to deliver a fantastic series of gigs so new musicians have somewhere fantastic to show what they are all about.

“Robbie is a hugely valued member of our team. We are proud to be part of the band’s story and we can’t wait to see SLIX in action”.
