A CONVICTED rapist who was jailed earlier this year for attacking a woman at his Greenock home has appealed against his sentence.

Stuart McIntyre was found guilty by a jury of targeting the victim – who was around half his age – at his own address in the town in May 2019.

McIntyre, 56, received a six-year prison term, with an extended two years on licence in the community, following a High Court trial.

He was also added to the sex offenders register indefinitely.

However, he has now lodged a bid to reduce the length of his period of imprisonment.

An appeal is set to be heard by two judges at the High Court in Edinburgh next week.

The Telegraph spoke to the victim in April after McIntyre was locked up, with the woman branding his punishment a ‘major kick in the teeth’.

The sentence was backdated to December 2022, meaning McIntyre may end up serving less time behind bars than it took for the court case to conclude.

The woman told the Tele at the time: "When I heard the sentence, I cried, because that is all he got for the trauma I went through.

"That was not a fair amount. I understand I may never think anything was fair but less time than I waited to get the verdict? I just can't get over that.

"In my eyes, for everything I went through after it, that was a major kick in the teeth."

The victim said she was in 'an absolute state' after the serious sexual assault and reported the incident when bruises appeared on her legs.

She said she became 'so mentally unwell' from the horrifying experience that she tried to take her own life in the months afterwards.

Despite the woman's pre-recorded evidence and the verdict of the jury, McIntyre has never accepted any guilt.

Highlighting the long-term impact on her and her family, the woman said: "Yes, it's different for murder as you're taking somebody's life.

"But whenever you rape somebody you are destroying them for life. They've got to live with that.”

The appeal hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 10.
