13/09/2011 - Peter Weatherson said Morton were operating with the deadliest strike-force in the league and one of strongest he had seen in his time at Cappielow.
The forward grabbed his third goal of the campaign after coming on as a substitute against Ayr United on Saturday after the on-form duo of Peter MacDonald and Andy Jackson had put Ton 3-0 ahead early on.
And while Weatherson, 31, was desperate to force his way back into the starting eleven, he was thrilled to see the club preserving their imperious start to the season.
Weatherson told the Tele: “It was nice to get a wee run-out and obviously the scoreline speaks for itself it was a great result.
“I thought we started the game really well and getting three goals helped us.
“I can’t complain about how things are going. I’ve just got to take my chances.
“Obviously, I want to be playing but the way the strikers are performing I can’t really complain.
“But I think the four of us — Peter, Andy, Archie Campbell and myself — know that if we aren’t scoring goals then someone will walk in ahead of us.
“This is my ninth season at Morton and I would definitely say we are strong as we ever have been with the four of us in the squad.
“In the past we have had individual strikers who have been really good players, but I think the group of four of us now are as good as any in the First Division this year.”
That statement was backed up by the mammoth haul of 28 strikes Ton have stuck away this season in all competitions.
Ton led the league by three clear points, but Weatherson insisted the squad are not being distracted by title talk.
He added: “As for being at the top of the league at the start of the season, it’s obviously a good thing and is good for confidence.
“But we don’t want to get too carried away. We’ll keep our feet on the ground and keep doing the right things.
“Hopefully when it comes May we will still be there and we can start talking about it then.”
