GREENOCK town centre was left gridlocked in the aftermath of a rush-hour collision on the A8 earlier today.
Emergency services were called at around 8.15am this morning after a collision on Greenock's Rue End street, adjacent to the A8 approaching the town centre, causing delays to commuters.
Police earlier told the Tele that the accident involving a car and a pedestrian saw a child, aged 11, rushed to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for treatment.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 8.15am on Friday, September 13 we were called to a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Rue End Street, Greenock.
“Emergency services attended the 11-year-old child pedestrian was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children for treatment.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
Dalrymple Street was closed eastbound to the east of the Bullring roundabout immediately after the collision, with the knock on effects still being felt hours later.
Traffic was diverted along Sir Michael Street and into Regent Street before eventually re-joining the A8 closer to Greenock Community Fire Station.
The diversion caused long tailbacks and several smaller roads began to feel the strain as drivers sought out alternative routes.
Queues could be seen stretching back far along Regent Street and back onto the A8, near where the collision occurred.
Traffic Scotland said the closed section of the A8 was reopened at around 11.20am.
The current condition of the child is unknown.
