AN INVERCLYDE pipe band has seen out its 2024 season by launching a second competitive band.

Lower Clyde Pipes and Drums' main band enjoyed success throughout their first year in Grade 3B, finishing off with strong results at the Cowal Highland Gathering.

They were placed third in the march, strathspey and reel (MSR), as well as claiming the runner-up spot in the medley event.

The competition was the last outing of the season for the talented musicians, but the first for Lower Clyde’s new Grade 4B band.

The development band had only been playing together for six weeks before taking to the field in Dunoon.

Secretary Lorna McDaid said: “We’ve had a good bit of financial backing from Blu Marine.

“They’ve been very generous with funding to help us get a second band off the ground, because that meant we needed two sets of everything."

Both bands took part in the Gathering’s parade through Dunoon, sporting some minion-themed fancy dress for the occasion.

The musicians also got a surprise on their journey over to the games when Greenock actor and Cowal chieftain Martin Compston popped on to to their bus to say hello.

Lorna said: “It was pure coincidence. We were sitting and the bus driver noticed him next to us.

“He came aboard to give us a wee good luck wish.”

They are now looking ahead to the 2025 season and are inviting both experienced pipers and drummers and learners to get involved.

Lorna added: “We’re looking for competent pipers and drummers for 3B.

“For 4B, we’re looking for anyone who would like to learn from age eight upwards.

“We’ve got some really young learners and some older learners too.”
