AN ATTACKER who raped a woman as she slept at a property in Greenock has today been jailed.

Nooralhuda Yousif Al Bashir's victim awoke during the assault but pretended to be asleep due to the fear she experienced.

The 32-year-old met up with the victim who was on a night out with friends in the town before she went back to his home in John Wilson Street.

The woman said that she was drinking vodka but told a court: "I was more drunk than I should have been."

She said she did not remember how she got to the address but did recall being sick in the bathroom.

The woman, aged 22, said: "I came out and I asked him if I could lie down because I wasn't feeling well.

"I thought I would feel better if I had a lie down.

"He said it was okay and he showed me where the bedroom was."

She said she got under the covers on a bed and fell asleep but woke to find Al Bashir on top of her having sex with her while she was lying on her back.

The woman said in pre-recorded evidence played to a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh: "I was scared."

She said she was frightened of moving as he would know she was awake, adding: "I had sobered up quite a bit. I was really scared."

The woman described pretending to be asleep as she was subjected to the ordeal and did not react or say anything.

Afterwards she got into a taxi to take her to her home address and said she felt 'numb'.

The attack victim said: "I felt sick not because of the drink, but because of what had just happened."

Al Bashir had denied the sex crime against the woman on May 29 in 2022 at his home in Greenock but was found guilty of assaulting and raping her while she was asleep and incapable of consenting, as well as continuing with the attack after she awoke and pretended to be asleep.

A judge adjourned sentence on him for the preparation of a background report until October 22 at the High Court in Dundee.

Lord Young told Al Bashir, who was on bail, that he would be remanded in custody.

Al Bashir, who was helped in following proceedings by an Arabic interpreter, was placed on the sex offenders' register.
