Police say they are closing in on a suspect in the hunt following a spate of brek-ins in Port Glasgow.

Provost Drew McKenzie raised the issue of the break-ins at a meeting of Inverclyde Council's police and fire scrutiny panel.

He said: "In the last month or so there have been two break-ins in hairdressing salons. It seems a weird trade to target.

"I understand chemicals within these salons are linked with the misuse of drugs. Could this be an issue?"

He also asked if anyone has been charged in connection with the break-ins.

Chief Inspector David Docherty said he did not believe the raids were linked to drug misuse.

He told the panel: "I am aware of these break-ins. Charity tins were stolen. We have a suspect for it."
