THERE were plenty of pluses for pupils and parents as Glenbrae Children’s Centre opened its doors to the community to celebrate Maths Week Scotland.

The Greenock nursery have organised several numeracy-related 'stay and play' sessions this week to tie in with a national week-long focus on mathematics.

Youngsters and their parents learned about measurements as they baked banana bread and enjoyed some outdoor fun by playing games such as 'What's the Time, Mr Wolf?'.

Jaclyn Sweeney, Glenbrae's excellence and equity lead, told the Tele the events had been well received.

She said: “We’ve got a variety of different activities for the children which are all maths-related.

“They‘re making banana bread with their families to take home and we’ll give them the recipes so that it’s something they can continue at home.

“The other room will be lots of numeracy games and stories and they’ll be making play dough as well which is another activity they can do at home.

“Outdoors they’re doing hopscotch and 'What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?'.

“It’s really just to let the parents see how we include them in the nursery  and how they can do things at home.

“They’ll all get a wee leaflet home with all the learning they’ve done today on it.

“This is about letting the parents come in and see what we do.

"You can tell them but when they actually get to come in and spend time with their children hands on it makes a difference.”
