01/10/2013 – Morton’s magnificent win over Celtic had brought back memories of past cup campaigns for fans — and dreams of future final glory.

One of them, Cameron Spence of Greenock, said Morton’s shock 1-0 win at Parkhead had reminded him of the club’s run to the League Cup Final against Rangers in season 1963/64.

The famous win sent Cameron digging into his treasure trove of Ton memorabilia and remembering the matches which carried them all the way to Hampden.

Cameron, who was a former international athlete, said: “As a 13-year-old boy I was so looking forward to watching Morton take on the mighty Rangers in the final of the Scottish League Cup in October 1963 at Hampden Park.

“On our way to the final we qualified easily into the quarterfinals with wins against Ayr United, Stranraer and Clyde.

“Then we came up against First Division Motherwell at Fir Park.

“We drew 0-0 and a week later were at Cappielow for the return leg — the crowd that night must have been over 20,000.

“Morton completely dominated the match and ran out easy winners 2-0, then it was Hibernian at Ibrox in the semi-final, where there were about 25,000 Morton supporters.

“It went to a replay and this time there were 30,000 Morton fans, far outnumbering the Hibs ones.

“We won with a penalty from Allan McGraw and that journey home was memorable.

“I was hanging out the train window shouting to everybody we had won and I managed to get soot in my eye — my father spent the rest of the trip home trying to get it out!”

The Ton side were at that struggling in the league but their cup shock exploits had captured attention nationwide.

Despite their cup success against Celtic, the Ton failed to beat St Johnstone in the next round and their fortunes in the league continued to decline, resulting in their relegation at the end of the season.
