04/10/2007 – The good ship Telegraph stepped in to help a group of Greenock schoolkids who wanted say a big ‘thank you’ to the QE2 and the Red Arrows after their spectacular recent visit.
Ravenscraig Primary’s P2 class decided to pay tribute to Cunard and the RAF’s airbourne daredevils, but didn’t know how to get in touch. So the Tele provided them with contacts so they could say a big thanks to their heroes.
A selection of colourful cards and drawings were winging their way to the Cunard and the Red Arrows pilots.
The class got the idea after learning about letters and postcards thanks to a visit from a friendly Greenock postman.
One of the pupils was six-year-old Amy Provan, whose grandfather worked on the QE2 when it was first launched, 40 years ago.
She said: “My granddad worked on the QE2. I really enjoyed seeing it.
“The ship was the best part of the day. It was really, really big.
“We wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the QE2 and the Red Arrows for coming here.”
Isabel Lind, head teacher at Ravenscraig, said: “The pupils very much enjoyed the visit. It was very exciting. They had a visit from the postman so they already knew about writing letters and postcards.
“The kids loved doing their drawings and we thought it would be a wonderful way to say ‘thank you’.”
