NEW statistics show that just over 15 per cent of adults in Inverclyde are currently smokers.
Data published by the Office for National Statistics estimated that 15.4 per cent of locals who are aged over 18 smoke.
The figures are five-year averages which cover the period from 2019 to 2023.
The UK local authority with the highest proportion of smokers was Fenland in England, with 22.1 per cent, while North Lanarkshire was the top Scottish local authority, with 20.8 per cent.
