Branchton's very own 'big breakfast' is proving a hit with the young and young-at-heart.

The centre offers a free breakfast four morning a week when people can tuck into toast, bagels, cereals, teas and coffees for free.

It is free and open to everyone in the community from young families, to working people and folk who are retired.

Carol McEwan, project co-ordinator, said: "The breakfast club runs from 8am to 10.30am.

"People who come in to use our shop use it, kids on their way to school or parents dropping of, people coming to classes at the centre.

"We have tea, toast, bagels, jams and spread, fruit juices. It's chance for people to come out to meet people and to socialise.

"It's about reducing social isolation."

Volunteer Edna Hughes, who serves up the breakfast, said: "I love meeting all the different people. You build up a relationship with them. It's good company, it brings people out."

June Shields, 67, said: "I just live five minutes away. It's good for me and my dogs are also part and parcel of it. I live on my own and it's brilliant.

"The staff go above and beyond. It's an awesome place."

Childminder Lorna Jamieson said: "We come to the toddlers group and the kids like getting a wee drink and toast in the morning.

"It's a good idea. It's great for the community."

Gary McKenna said: "It's brilliant. I come here every day. I like Edna's tea and toast."

Philip McArthur agreed, saying: "It's a place for folk to meet people. There's always a nice atmosphere."
