INVERCLYDE MSP Stuart McMillan is hosting a 'cost of living advice surgery' this week to help local people access more than £3.6 million in Pension Credit.

The SNP politician will be at the Oak Mall on October 11 from 11am-2pm, supported by representatives from Home Energy Scotland and Advice Direct Scotland.

Mr McMillan has been hosting regular cost of living surgeries since 2022 in a bid to encourage more constituents to engage with agencies which offer energy-specific advice and support.

Friday's surgery will be the first of a few planned over the coming months, and will be focused on encouraging people to apply for Pension Credit as it's now a pre-requisite for receiving the winter fuel payment.

Mr McMillan says Independent Age, an organisation which supports older people, estimates that more than £3.6million in Pension Credit goes unclaimed annually in Inverclyde by 1,590 pensioner households.

The MSP said: "I’m particularly focused on helping households who’re going to be struggling now that they no longer receive the winter fuel payment.

"There are many local households who’re entitled to Pension Credit but haven’t applied for it.

"There are of course working age households who are also facing fuel debts and struggling to afford their utility bills, so this surgery is for anyone who is looking for advice.

"If you are worried about your energy bills, or any other cost of living matter, please don’t wait to contact my office.

"We can do all we can to help as well as putting you in touch with relevant organisations or agencies who may be able to offer tailored, specific advice."

Mr McMillan will be stationed in the Oak Mall foyer, just outside Greggs, from 11am to 2pm.
