A PORT Glasgow man is due to stand trial after he denied making ‘racially offensive’ remarks to retail workers at Greenock’s Oak Mall.

Jonathan McGill, 28, is alleged to have targeted two people at the shopping centre on October 1.

He is charged with behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards both men by repeatedly shouting, swearing and uttering threats of violence and uttering racially offensive remarks.

McGill, of King Street, is said to have challenged one of the men to a fight.

Prosecutors claim that he also removed a number of display items from shelves in a ‘sweeping motion’, causing them to fall to the ground.

He pleaded not guilty to two charges through defence solicitor Amy Spencer after appearing from custody at Greenock Sheriff Court.

A trial has been set for January 20 next year, with McGill being granted bail in the meantime.
