A MUCH-loved member of the team at a Port Glasgow primary school who has helped hundreds of pupils and their families over more than 20 years has decided to retire.
Pupil support assistant Sharon Calder is leaving St Michael's after being a big part of the school for 22 years.
To mark her last day in the classroom, the school hosted a special mass, led by Father Jonathan Whitworth, and invited Sharon's family for a day of celebration.
Sharon, 57, lives with long Covid, and says now is the right time to take a step back from working life and spend more time with her family.
She told the Tele: "I am overwhelmed. The mass was so beautiful
"Everything has been lovely, but it's all very bittersweet. I'm really sad to leave.
"I just want to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity and helping me celebrate a lovely day."
Sharon said the best part of her job has been the children.
She added: "The school has been such a big part of my life and I've met so many children and watched them grow up.
"I will miss all the hugs.
"I'll miss the staff, as it's been like being part of a big family."
St Michael's head teacher Colette Wallace said Sharon has been the 'heart and soul' of the school for the last 22 years.
She added: "We'll all really miss Sharon.
"She has helped so many children over the years with their learning, their social skills, and with their sacraments and preparing for mass.
"Her children attended the school and her grandchildren do now, so it's clear that she has such an affection for the school.
"She'll always be part of the school community."
Sharon received a letter from Bishop John Keenan on her retirement.
He said: "I want to commend you personally for the service you have given to catholic education over the years in St Michael's.
"I know in that time, you have always had the confidence and affection of your colleagues and I know you will be greatly missed.
"You have dedicated your career to the pupils and their families in a school where your own children and grandchildren attended, and which is dear to your heart.
"You have been a true St Michael's girl, supporting the learning and development of so many children over the years, and I hope you can look back with a sense of pride on all you have achieved."
