WORK to demolish a 143-year-old Greenock church is due to begin soon.
The keys to Greenock Methodist Church will be handed over to a demolition company tomorrow, with work expected to begin before the end of October.
Demolition work is due to last for up to 10 weeks.
Ardgowan Hospice, which owns the building, took the decision to demolish the church due to the ‘significant deterioration’ of its structural integrity and rising costs in relation to insurance and utilities.
In July, the charity invited former members to share memories of the church - which was constructed in 1881 - at a special afternoon tea.
An Ardgowan Hospice spokesperson said: “The demolition of the Greenock Methodist Church signifies a poignant moment in the town’s history, reflecting both the inevitability of change and the importance of preserving memories.
“As Greenock moves forward, the legacy of the church will continue to resonate within the community, reminding everyone of the rich heritage that shaped their town.

“Neighbours will be kept up-to-date with the progress of the demolition."
