AN AWARD-WINNING youth band from Port Glasgow has secured more than £2,000 from an Inverclyde Council cash pot.
The Riverside Youth Band was given £2,040 from the local authority’s community grants fund to help with the expense of hall hire, running costs and musical director fees.
The band, which won the ‘live music’ award at the Tele’s Community Champion awards ceremony in June, includes young brass and percussion players from Port Glasgow and the surrounding area, and rehearses every Friday during term time at Port Glasgow New Parish Church.
The group, whose youth and training bands recently performed at Kilmacolm Old Kirk, had asked the council for a grant of £7,350, but the fund was heavily oversubscribed, with bids submitted for more than £850,000 by more than 100 groups across Inverclyde seeking a share of a funding pot of £251,375.
