GREENOCK'S James Watt Dock will turn from harbour to exhibition later this week as Inverclyde prepares to be wowed by a spellbinding blend of art, culture, and Halloween fun.
The Marina's famous sugar warehouse on East Hamilton Street will host a two day exhibition next weekend exploring a relationship between grief, the body and the sea.
The instillation, called 'This Endless Sea', is led by interdisciplinary artist Chloë Smith and comprises a six-screen film, made in collaboration with artist and filmmaker Lucy Cash, and a soundscape by composer Kim Moore, housed inside a unique coastal shelter, designed by Bethany Wells.
The free event, will run from 11am until 4pm on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27; however tickets are needed for the show, which runs at 15 minute intervals.
This Endless Sea is designed to be an intimate experience, with room inside for just one or two people (or a family) at a time. The shelter is looked after by a team of ‘hut keepers’, who are there to greet visitors and have conversations.
The work is born out of Chloë’s personal experience of loss, and was filmed on her local coastline in North Northumberland, where she regularly swims in the sea. This Endless Sea has been shown in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Heysham in Lancashire, GIFT in Gateshead, and a specially devised version in Limerick City Gallery of Art.
The show is part of a wider celebration of the Galoshans Festival, that's entering its tenth year. The fortnight long festival started earlier this week (October 17) and runs until November 2.
Alison Bunce will be on site each day representing Compassionate Inverclyde, to provide warmth, friendship, mindfulness activities and a caring smile to anyone who takes part in this event.
The vibrant celebrations, running until November 2, are centred around Halloween traditions and its aim is to celebrate the wealth of art and culture that Inverclyde has to offer. This year’s lead partners are RIG Arts, Feral and The Beacon Art Centre.
The festival is also supported with programming by Inverclyde Libraries, Watt Institution, Kayos Theatre Company, Greenock Rock Choir, Magic Torch Comics, TRANCND, Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, The Wyllieum and Inverclyde YMI Street Band.
The festival will feature a range of events and activities where locals and visitors can immerse themselves in a world of art installations, theatre, street performances, live music, such as Strut's performances in the east end of Greenock on Thursday night.
