CALMAC ferry users are facing further disruption to their travel plans after adverse weather forced Bute services to divert from Wemyss Bay to Gourock.

The two vessels on the Rothesay route have been diverted until the close of play on Friday due to strong winds hitting the west coast of Scotland, with Storm Ashley expected to arrive over the weekend.

Ferry bosses have advised that services will leave Gourock for Rothesay at 12:30, 14:25, 15:40, 17:25 and 18:55.

However they have warned that sailings are subject to cancellation at short notice should wind conditions worsen during the afternoon.

As this article was published at 12.20pm, the Gourock-Dunoon and Gourock-Kilcreggan services are running to timetable, but CalMac says those routes are also subject to disruption or cancellation.

Services could face further disruption this weekend after the Met Office predicted a period of strong south to south-easterly winds will likely develop through Sunday morning, with a a weather warning for latter parts of the weekend.

Winds will eventually turn south-westerly, with a period of especially strong winds possible during Sunday afternoon and evening.

Forecasters say there is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from large waves, flying debris and from beach materials being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

Southerly or south-westerly winds gusting to between 40 and 50 miles per hour later this afternoon, while up to 8mm of rain is also being forecast into this evening.
