OCTOBER 22, 2012: Fun-loving staff turned a Greenock supermarket into a live Abba tribute gig to collect money, money, money for charity.
The four workers from Tesco in Greenock entertained customers when they belted out songs by the chart-topping Swedish pop stars for three hours.
Popular tracks I Had a Dream, Super Trouper, Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia all had a place on the set list, with customers joining in and dancing through the aisles.
Staff collected donations in buckets and all the money gathered was to go to Stand Up to Cancer, a charity which is working to develop new treatments for cancer patients.
Tesco worker Sharon Palmer took part in the fundraiser, along with her colleagues Janet McGeown, Elaine Cannon and Susan Connel.
Taking a break from performing, she told Telegraph: “The atmosphere has been fantastic.
“We have had some customers standing watching us all day. “There are people singing and dancing, it’s great fun.”
Staff in Tesco Greenock had already raised over £1,000 that year for Cancer Research through organised events in store — and the Abba day looked set to add to the total.
Sharon said: “We wanted to do something to help Stand Up to Cancer and came up with this idea — everyone likes Abba.
“The customers have been really supportive, handing over donations all day.
“Some even carried the buckets around asking others to donate.
“I hope we can raise a couple of hundred pounds for this great cause.”
