A KIND donation from a well-known Inverclyde fundraiser is helping Greenock tots become wonderful young woodworkers.

James Crawford runs generator draws, raffles and football card competitions on his personal Facebook page, and regularly helps out local organisations.

A donation of £300 from James has helped the team at Gibshill Children's Centre set up The Lumberjack Shack - a shed where youngsters can develop a whole range of skills by using specially-designed tools and taking part in different activities.

James said: "I contacted a lot of different places to see if they were looking for help with projects and Gibshill mentioned The Lumberjack Shack which I thought sounded great.

"It's amazing to see what the money has helped with.

"I'm very grateful to the centre for inviting me along to officially open the shack.

"It's shown me just how much the funding is appreciated."

Gibshill early years education and childcare officers Angela Fowler and Hilary McGivern have devised a programme to help pupils learn a whole range of skills.

They completed a training course at Broomhill Community Hub to find out more about the kinds of activities that will help the youngsters.

Angela said: "The children are taking part in small groups and going through a programme we've devised.

"It's about working with nature and natural materials, and they'll learn about assessing risk and working as part of a team."

Hilary added: "Children are taught to use the tools safely and get the opportunity to try a lot of different techniques.

"All of the children will have the opportunity to utilise the shack."

Youngsters don their high visibility vests and googles before going into the shack and testing out their skills in hammering and joining things together.

Depute head of centre Jenna Hemphill said: "The children are really loving it.

"We want to say thank-you so much to James on behalf of all of us here at Gibshill, and the children and parents too.

"We do our own fundraising but we've been able to buy the shed thanks to this donation, so it's very much appreciated.

"It will be here forever and will benefit so many children."
