THE three main war memorials in Inverclyde will all be rededicated this weekend as people from across the area gather to pay their silent tribute to those who gave their lives while serving in the country's armed forces.
The rededication ceremonies will be held during the Remembrance Sunday commemorations at the memorials in Fore Street in Port Glasgow, the Wellpark in Greenock, and Albert Road in Gourock.
Each of the three memorials is being rededicated just a few weeks on from the 100th anniversary of the unveiling and original dedication of the memorial in Greenock, where an inscription reads: "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam [for the greater glory of God] and in grateful remembrance of the men of Greenock who gave their lives in the Great War and in the 1939-1945 War."
The Greenock memorial was unveiled in October 1924 to honour the 1,500 men from the town who died in the First World War, 400 of whom served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
The Telegraph has been sharing the stories this week of the memorials in Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow, as well as the Free French memorial on Lyle Hill, thanks to former local minister the Rev Alan Sorensen, who retired in 2022 as minister of the Wellpark Mid Kirk in Greenock.
Alan Sorensen's series on Inverclyde's war memorials:
Looking back 100 years to the dedication and unveiling of Greenock's war memorial
Gourock war memorial is a sign of our freedom
Port Glasgow's war memorial tells us plenty about the true bedrock of the town
Free French memorial is a stunning landmark and a great symbol of Inverclyde
