A SECTION of the A8 is to close overnight this week as essential works are carried out in Port Glasgow.
The westbound carriageway will be closed between Newark Roundabout and the Comet Roundabout from 8pm tomorrow.
Amey will undertake essential lining and surfacing works to complete the earlier phase of resurfacing which was carried out during the summer months.
The road is expected to remain closed until 6am on Wednesday.
During this time, a diversion will be in place the A761 Clune Brae to Kilmacolm Road, then on to Boglestone Avenue, Ardmore Road and Springhill Road.
Traffic will then be directed to continue on to Highholm Street, Balfour Street, Shore Street and Brown Street before returning to the A8.
Fore Street will also be closed during the works, with drivers being diverted via Scarlow Street to Shore Street and Brown Street.
Access will be maintained for Bay Street residents under escort from the closed link road between Glasgow Road, Clune Brae and Newark Roundabout.
Amey noted that all schemes are weather dependent and works may be cancelled or rescheduled if conditions are not favourable.
It is hoped that the works will benefit vehicles using the route each day and reduce the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.
