NOVEMBER 17, 2007: Excited football fans across Inverclyde were on the edge of their seats as Scotland took on Italy at Hampden in their crucial Euro 2008 qualifier.
Supporters clubs in Greenock and beyond were backing James McFadden and the boys all the way and were hoping to be celebrating in their drives.
Chick Kavanagh, convener of the Andy Ritchie Travel Club, said he would be getting right behind the lads at Hampden.
He said: “Lots of fans are going for a draw, but I think we can sneak a victory. If we get an early goal we’ll be fine — that’ll knock the Italians off course.
“I’m concerned the lads will let the sense of occasion get to them too much and they all get a bit too emotional. But I feel confident we’ll get a win.”
Travel club member Rona Boag said: “This match has come along at the best possible time.
“Winning the Commonwealth Games has got everyone thinking about being Scottish again. It’s definitely made everyone more patriotic. It’s fantastic being a Scotland fan just now.”
Avid Morton and Scotland fans from the Morton Supporters Club were also set to be tasting the atmosphere live at Hampden.
Club members Kenny Lee and John Gisbey werre all set for a massive party.
Kenny said: “The atmosphere at Hampden will get us through. I’m nervous about it but think we’ll sneak it by one goal.”
And John said: “It’ll be great fun in the pub before and after anyway. All we need is a draw, but I think we can do more.
"I would swap a good Morton result for a win at Hampden — that’s how important this is.”
Despite the excitement, it was not to be for Scotland, as Italy defeated them 2-1.
