THE winter refit of the iconic PS Waverley paddle steamer is well under way in Glasgow after a busy year of sailings on the Clyde.
Work is progressing on several aspects of Waverley’s winter refit with attention currently focused on deck works and the removal of the boiler burners.
More than 150 metres of deck timbers have been lifted and replaced on the promenade deck, and the boiler burners have been removed in preparation for cleaning.
In the coming weeks, the new boiler burners will arrive for fitting and assembly.
This project alone will cost over £300,000 but is necessary given that spares are no longer available for the current burners.
Next week, volunteers will begin the task of sanding and varnishing deck seats. Anyone interested in helping out should get in touch via email at info@waverleyexcursions.co.uk.
Next season marks the 50th anniversary since Waverley first sailed in preservation. This winter the cost of maintenance, survey and dry docking will be more than £1 million.
