A VITAL community facility in Port Glasgow is set to reopen to the public next week after being closed for a year.

The Post Office within the Londis store in Dubbs Road will relaunch on Friday, November 29.

The Port branch - which was originally owned and managed by Post Office - was closed by bosses in November 2023 and is now reopening thanks to the store's co-owners Nida and Nauman Ahmad.

Nida and Nauman have completed the training they needed to start running the facility themselves.

Nida said she can't wait to start offering services to the public again.

She added: "It's very exciting for us to be opening back up.

"When Post Office closed the counter they advised that we would need to transfer the facility into our own name if we wanted to reopen it, so that's what we've done.

"It's great to be able to provide this facility for local people."

To celebrate the reopening of the store, staff will be hosting a fun day welcoming customers old and new.

Nida said she's pleased that Post Office bosses have recognised that there's a genuine need for the service within the Port Glasgow community.

She added: "We have a lot of loyal customers and many of them are elderly people.

"The shop has been here for almost 40 years and we've been here for about six years.

"We are a really close-knit community and you get to know everyone.

"It's a social thing for some people and it's very much a community space."

Nida said the Post Office counter will be an asset for the community for many reasons, and will be particularly useful for banking.

She added: "There's no bank in Port Glasgow now so people can come and do their banking here.

"They can deposit money and withdraw money, whatever they need.

"They won't have to stand outside at a cash machine in the freezing cold either.

"This is a good time for us to be opening as we're in the run-up to Christmas, and it will be ideal for people sending parcels."

Nida said the Post Office will be open six days a week until 6pm with the potential for the hours to be extended.

She said the facility will be great for local people and for local businesses.

Nida added: "Everyone is very excited.

"We've all worked really hard to reopen for people again."
