A GREENOCK mum fears for the safety of her twin sons who have been left trapped in Vietnam since the coronavirus outbreak.

Georgina Currie told the Tele that she has been left frantic after the south east Asian country closed its borders last month, leaving her sons Colin and James McMaster, 26, unable to leave.

They have repeatedly tried to get out but their flights have been cancelled.

Now their mum is hoping the UK Government will fly them home after MP Ronnie Cowan stepped in to intervene.

The lads are among dozens of Inverclyde residents currently stranded all over the world and desperate to get home safely.

Georgina, from West Blackhall Street, said: "I just want them to come home.

"They have had flights booked and then cancelled.

"It keeps happening.

"They have not been able to leave, then Vietnam closed its borders.

"I can only get in touch with them on Facebook.

"They are worried as well.

"People in Vietnam are starting to turn nasty because they are worried [about the virus].

"They were living in a hostel but managed to get a flat."

Former film production student Colin, 26, has been living in the Vietnam capital Hanoi and teaching English.

His brother James and his girlfriend Nicole Watson joined him two months ago for an extended holiday.

Mum-of-five Georgina, who works as a phlebotomist in Inverclyde Royal, said: "I am used to them travelling and being away.

"But I just want them home safe.

"I have tried to get help from the government but nobody can help.

"Our MP Ronnie Cowan has been brilliant.

"But I am crying all the time, I can't sleep.

"I am just so worried about what happens if they can't get out."

Inverclyde MP Mr Cowan says Colin and James' plight is mirrored by many others and he is working hard to help bring them home to the UK.

He has been contacted by people stranded in Spain, New Zealand and Kenya.

The UK Government announced plans earlier this week to rescue British nationals stranded abroad and they plan to use BA, Virgin and Easyjet aircraft to bring them home, while not ruling out using non-civilian jets.

Georgina added: "I just hope they get on those flights.

"I am feeling totally helpless here."

MP Mr Cowan said: “My thoughts are with the many Inverclyde constituents who’ve contacted me, or their family members, to highlight their frustrations at being forgotten about and stranded abroad.

“It’s been a long drawn out process to get the Foreign Office to do the right thing and bring home Inverclyde citizens who are currently throughout the world.

“I know of constituents stranded in places like Vietnam, New Zealand, Spain and Kenya.

"I hope they will now be able to get back to this country safely.”
