MY article last week about the number of Greenock shops selling food items 100 years ago also mentioned Tesco’s first supermarket in the town.
Located in Westburn Street, it was the company’s first Scottish store.
Something went through my mind that it opened shortly before I joined the Telegraph in 1972 but a reader has advised I got the year wrong.
The accompanying Telegraph images were taken when the supermarket opened on November 24, 1970.
Hundreds turned up before the official ceremony which was carried out by television personality Hughie Green.
The Telegraph reported that the whole of Westburn Street was blocked off for more than an hour and police officers linked arms to hold the crowd back as they struggled to get into the store.
Host of the highly successful TV talent show Opportunity Knocks, Hughie Green is pictured with local girl Elizabeth Hoyle and Joan McDougall from Bearsden.
