The lower section of the accompanying image looks completely different today.
Now the site of the Morrisons superstore, it is shown when still home to a variety of businesses.
The building seen at the foot of the image would likely have been more than 100 years old. In earlier times this area also had domestic properties.
Visible is a section of Chapel Street which stretched along to Bogle Street.
The Central Station is shown with buildings which vanished when it was redeveloped.
Also no longer standing is the Salvation Army hostel, Fewster House, in Terrace Road.
