Over 200,000 disabled adults have now had their benefit award transferred to Social Security Scotland from the Department for Work and Pensions.
This means almost two thirds (63%) of adults in Scotland who were previously getting Personal Independence Payment (PIP) are now receiving Adult Disability Payment.
This is an important milestone in the devolution of benefits to Scotland, especially because people who received DWP benefits like PIP talked about the system being inhumane.
They had experienced a system which did not get the decision right first time and which involved degrading assessments run by private providers.
That worry is over for many now as the Scottish Government have moved the awards of hundreds of thousands of people to our new system, where they can benefit from its founding principles of dignity, fairness and respect.
If you are waiting to have your award transferred, please be assured that you do not need to do anything.
The move will begin automatically and there will not be any gaps or changes to your payments.
In other news, on Thursday evening, I attended Port Glasgow High School’s Prize Giving event.
Being invited to celebrate the achievements of our young people is one of the highlights of being a constituency MSP, so I always try my best to attend as many of these events as I can.
I want to extend a huge well done to all the prize winners and thank you to their teachers and support staff for helping them excel, and I wish all the pupils the very best for the future.
