Yesterday I attended local Remembrance Sunday services to pay my respects to those who have served, and are serving, in our armed forces and to remember the civilians who’ve lost their lives during times of conflict. Lest we forget.

I think of the Ukrainians, both here in Inverclyde and across the world, who’re still living with the consequences of Russia’s illegal invasion of their country. I also think of Gaza, and of the efforts of relief agencies trying to provide humanitarian aid in what is currently one of the most unsafe places on earth.

Remembrance Sunday is a time to reflect on the many cases of conflict and ultimate sacrifice, which is often a result of political choice – and an easier one than choosing compassion and kindness. Yet we should all strive to be kind and respectful, especially when that does not come easy.

Finally, I want to reflect on the Gourock by-election which took place on Thursday.

I want to wish the successful candidate, Ian Hellyer, all the very best in his new role.

The SNP's candidate, Robert Kirkpatrick, came a very close second in first preferences, and I want to thank everyone who supported his campaign, as I know a lot of people put a lot of hours into helping him.
