I WATCHED the recent political party conferences keen to hear about what we could expect from the parties at a General Election and, specifically, what their policies could mean for people who live in Inverclyde.
At the next election, it looks like it’s going to be a straight choice in Inverclyde between either a Labour or SNP MP.
We know what to expect from the SNP MP because he’s been Inverclyde’s representative for nearly a decade and, from the look of their party conference, they aren’t offering people anything new.
Apart from reheating the old arguments over independence, Humza Yousaf’s only 'new' idea was a council tax freeze that he doesn’t even know how he’s going to pay for.
It seems like the SNP are hell bent on making life even more difficult for the people who are delivering council services.
The Labour Party conference spelled out the difference that they would make in government – whether that was with a new deal for working people, increasing wages or bringing growth back to our economy.
It was good to see a party with a concrete plan to make life better for people in our community, rather than just a series of soundbites or commitments with no idea how to pay for them.
I was also glad that our local Labour candidate – Martin McCluskey – got a chance to speak about what he would do as Inverclyde’s MP.
It’s good to see him already using the national platforms he has to promote Inverclyde and to try to attract more jobs and employment to the area. It bodes well if he ends up being elected as our MP next year.
