IT was nice to recently see a picture of Fleming, Reid & Co in your 'Talk of the Towns' pages.
It reminded me that the mill took advantage of the hydro power from The Cut and Loch Thom.
An electrical engineer called George had the job of controlling the power from the 'Grid' and the one third of consumption which came from Hydro.
He pointed out that at lunch time all the hydro power was sent to the 'Grid', in other words back to the electricity company.
Nothing has changed.
Small power supply and storage schemes will not be seen as a priority with power companies so our representatives must do what they can to make sure that the potential of our locality for small hydro and storage systems is fully recognised.
The action of pursuing this has already been taken by one of our candidates who is standing for the Westminster parliament.
We should give him every support and I hope he is successful in this endeavour and we can once again make use of these valuable resources.
