IT is ironic that the while most of the UK was using coal gas oil for many years Greenock was using 'green' energy in the form of hydro power.

A lot of this potential is still there in the form of reservoirs which can be adapted to hydro pump storage. This activity was taking place so unobtrusively that many people were unaware that it was happening.

Of course, this green energy was only part of Greenock's total consumption but it was significant. It was a consideration when deciding where to site industry.

With our new Labour Government and the promise of a Scottish headquarters for GB Energy, we must make the case for this headquarters and re-examine how we may make use of our local resources of wind, water and storage.
