MORTON trialist Darren Young is aware money is tight at Cappielow - but he still hopes he can do enough to convince Allan Moore to offer him a contract.
The Ton boss has said he doesn’t have the funds to sign the 32-year-old, but Young, pictured, is keen to impress in his trial matches with the club in the hope he can earn a deal if money does become available.
Speaking exclusively to the Tele, Young said: “I’m not sure if there’s the chance of a deal. I’ve come here for a chance to get my fitness up, but I’ll speak to Allan Moore about it during the week and hopefully there is something there.
“I’ve been training with the club for three weeks now and that’s helped me get myself back to full fitness and given Morton the chance to get to see me.
“I got the last 10 minutes at Cowdenbeath and started on Saturday, which was my first full game since the start of the season when I played with Queen of the South.
“I got injured at Queens and that killed any deal there, but I’m fit and have been fit and feeling good for three or four weeks now.” The former Dunfermline and Aberdeen midfielder played for 75 minutes in Saturday’s 1-0 loss at home to Raith Rovers and revealed he was gutted not to have given his side the lead with a 14th-minute volley.
He said: “I thought the Raith game went alright for me. I was quite unlucky in the first half when I nearly scored, as that would’ve really helped my chances of a contract, but the goalkeeper made a good save. Then I’ve put big Brian Graham through on goal and he was unlucky.
“There wasn’t much between ourselves and Raith, but if we just had a little bit more composure in front of goal and took our chances then we could have taken something from the game.” SFL rules state a player can play up to three matches with a club while listed as a trialist, meaning Young could still feature for Ton against Dunfermline this coming weekend. But he admits he is unsure if he will still be with the Cappielow club.
He added: “I’ve no idea if I’ll still be here to play on Saturday. You’d have to speak to Allan Moore about that, but hopefully I am and can kick on and get something here.”
