PORT Glasgow’s unsettled season has continued this week, with four departures from the club.

Paul Gordon, Brendan Grana, Andrew Ellis and keeper Ian Nixon have all left.

The departure of Ellis, who had only featured as an occasional sub, is hardly a surprise, nor is the moving on of Nixon, now that favoured keeper Robbie Graham is back on the scene.

But Gordon and Grana had been regular starters, and their decisions to quit might dismay the Port faithful, who have watched a season that started so promisingly look like ending in disappointment.

However, Port boss Craig Brown isn’t too perturbed by this week’s movements.

He said: “Players come and go a lot at this level.

“Paul and Brendan were not enjoying their football as much recently and wanted to leave.

“And with Robbie coming back in goals after his recent operation, Ian wouldn’t be guaranteed a game and wanted to return to the amateurs. But I would like to thank Ian for stepping in to help us out when he did.’’ Brown is also keen to point out that the departures haven’t exactly left him short of players.

He added: “Jamie McKenna and Kevin McKay joined us recently, and we have also now signed Dylan McLaughlin from the Port 21s team.

“Dylan has also had experience with the Morton youth set-up and with Largs Thistle, and is a welcome addition to the squad.

“These are quality signings, who will strengthen the squad for the remainder of the season.’’ After a difficult month, the Port will hope to get a morale-boosting win when they head to Lanarkshire tomorrow to face Newmains.

The Port’s only home win so far this season came against Newmains in October, when four goals from Scott Nugent helped them to a 7-0 victory.

But just like the club in general, Nugent’s fortunes have waned since then, and he is currently out with a recurring ankle injury, although he did manage to resume training this week.

Graeme McClement is also struggling with a groin strain, but hopes to have recovered in time for tomorrow’s match, which Brown says his men go into with confidence, despite the upheaval.

He said: “Training has been really good, and our form away from home has been very positive this season, so we travel to Newmains confident of doing well.’’ Kick-off at Victoria Park is at 2pm.
