PORT Glasgow head to the north-east of Glasgow tomorrow to face St Roch’s for the first time this season.
Given that both clubs are almost three-quarters of the way through their league fixtures, it’s curious that they haven’t been paired until now, and will then have to meet again at Parklea at some point in the next two months.
It might be tempting fate, but the prospect of a goals bonanza tomorrow look high.
Neither side has been involved in a goal-less league match so far this season and, just like the Port, St Roch’s games have thrown up some remarkable results.
In the past five games alone, they have netted 16 times, but have conceded 12.
But in their two most recent fixtures, they have notched up impressive victories over promotion hopefuls Glasgow Perthshire and Johnstone Burgh.
Those six points have kept the Garngad men in the promotion hunt, but Port Glasgow’s excellent 4-1 victory over Royal Albert means that Craig Brown’s men are also still in with a chance of grabbing one of the promotion slots, although defeat for either side tomorrow would most likely spell the end of any chance of going up.
Meanwhile, league leaders Rossvale’s 3-0 win at Newmains last week means the Glasgow club have clinched promotion with five matches to spare, and they are now just a couple of wins away from sealing the Second Division title, the club’s first trophy since they joined the Junior ranks not that along ago.
That leaves the rest scrambling about to grab one of the remaining two promotion places, as the season reaches a climax.
The Port should have most of their squad available for tomorrow, though last minute checks will be needed on Dylan McLaughlin and Graeme McClement to see if they have overcome some niggling injuries.
But there’s still no sign of a return for Scott Nugent, pictured, as the striker continues his battle to get back to full fitness.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash, Port boss Craig Brown said: “Although we haven’t yet played St Roch’s this season, I have had the chance to see them a few times, and there’s no doubt it will be a tough game.
“But spirits are high here after last week’s good win, so we are looking to build on that tomorrow.’’ Kick-off at James McGrory Park is at 2pm.
Port Glasgow Juniors are sponsored by Regents Vehicle Sales, Greenock, and MAC HSL Ltd.
