GREENOCK face Shettleston for the second time in a fortnight tomorrow, when the Glasgow club come to Ravenscraig.
In a 26-match league season it’s not exactly clever scheduling on the part of West Region bosses for the teams to be facing each other twice within such a short space of time.
But there will be no complaints from Greenock if they can manage a repeat of their excellent 1-0 victory at Greenfield Park two weeks ago.
A late Ryan Craig goal stunned the hosts in what was a major setback for their hopes of securing one of the two automatic promotion places into the Super Premier League.
At present, a third-placed finish and into the play-offs looks a more realistic option, but tomorrow’s match is just as vital for Greenock.
Results elsewhere on Wednesday night were generally favourable, with Martin Campbell’s men now 10 points above the relegation zone.
There’s a fair chance they might not even need them, but a point or two from their remaining three games should certainly seal their Super First Division status for next season.
And the manager has been boosted with the news that some of his squad’s recent injury worries are easing.
Sean Doherty appears to have finally shaken off an injury which has sidelined him for around six weeks, and resumed training this week.
Jamie Cunning has done likewise, while David McGarrigle, missing from the dramatic 2-1 win at Thorniewood last Saturday, managed to train on Wednesday night and will decide later today if he can be considered for tomorrow’s match.
And after being an interested spectator at recent matches, a return to the club could be on the cards for Paul Scott, who had left earlier in the season to take up a job in Shetland.
But the midfielder is now back in Inverclyde and could possibly feature as a trialist in the remaining league matches.
On the downside, though, Barry McLaughlin has been suspended for two games following his red card last Saturday, and Brendan Gillan is struggling to make it after taking a knock during the Thorniewood game.
Meanwhile, Campbell is urging his men not to think a repeat of the recent victory at Greenfield Park is likely without putting in the work.
He said: “It’s not ideal to be playing Shettleston again so soon, especially as they will be hurting at our win through there, and will be coming here with that fresh in their memory.
“I am sure our boys will not be thinking another three points is on the cards just because we won two weeks ago, but I have been stressing this week that they must guard against any complacency.” After tomorrow, Greenock’s next scheduled match is a Central League Cup tie against Renfrew on Wednesday night.
Having sold Western Park earlier in the season, Renfrew are temporarily ground-sharing with Johnstone Burgh.
But a farcical situation has put the Burgh’s Keanie Park in doubt for next midweek.
A tractor which was meant to roll the surface ended up leaving it badly rutted, and led to the last-minute postponement of the Burgh’s league match on Saturday, while Renfrew’s home game on Wednesday there had to be switched to McKenna Park, the home of St Anthony’s.
So it’s a case of wait and see as to where the Ravenscraig men will be playing next midweek, but first, minds must focus on tomorrow’s big game.
Kick-off at Ravenscraig is at 2pm.
Greenock Juniors are sponsored by SAVEHEAT, and the Lighthouse Bar.
Tomorrow’s match sponsor is Lawrence Miller. A club spokesman said: “Once again we would like to thank Lawrence for his continued support of Greenock Juniors down the years.”
