PORT Glasgow finally get to complete their season tonight, a whole month after their previous game.
It was way back on 15 April when the Port were last in action, with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of St Roch’s ending their hopes of promotion.
They have had to wait until tonight to play their last game of the campaign, as this evening’s opponents, Johnstone Burgh, caught up with their massive backlog of fixtures.
That has seen the Burgh gain promotion, and they will now go up to the First Division along with league champions Rossvale and either Glasgow Perthshire or St Roch’s. So in terms of importance, this evening’s encounter is relatively meaningless, although a win for the Port would see them move up a place in the league table and end the season in fifth spot.
Manager Craig Brown said: “Waiting so long to play this game hasn’t been ideal, but the boys have been training one night a week to keep them ticking over, and I am sure they will be professional and go out for the win to end our season on a positive note.’’ In team news, Kevin McKay (ankle injury) and Morton loanee Luke Irvine both miss out, but Jamie McKenna has shaken off a thigh injury and should play.
But the club’s former skipper, Paul Coyle, pictured, has already moved on after being told he would not be re-signed for next season. Coyle had two spells at the Port, with a move to Largs Thistle in between, but his performances had dipped in recent months, and manager Brown explained the thinking behind his decision not to keep him at the club.
He said: “I am already planning for next season and knew I would not be re-signing Paul, so the honest thing to do, for both the club and the player, was to tell him that now and be upfront with him.
“It was a football decision, made by me, and Paul asked to be released now, as it would give him the chance to perhaps play as a trialist with other teams with a view to next season.” Kick-off tonight at Keanie Park, Johnstone, is at 7pm.
Port Glasgow Juniors are sponsored by Regents Vehicle Sales, Greenock, and MAC HSL Ltd.
