GREENOCK bring the curtain down on their league campaign tonight when they travel to Cumbernauld to face Rob Roy.
Martin Campbell’s men can relax this evening, secure in the knowledge that they are safe from the threat of relegation.
But this will be far from an end-of-season encounter with nothing at stake.
Rob Roy need to win to retain any chance of catching league leaders Pollok. Anything less than three points for the home side would hand the Glasgow club the league title.
But a more realistic target for the Roy is to secure the other automatic promotion slot by finishing second in the table ahead of Shettleston, and thereby avoiding a play-off with the third bottom side in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Greenock will want to keep match sharp, as they will have at least one other game to play before the season is out, with a trip to face Carluke a week on Saturday in the third round of the Central League Cup.
Manager Campbell is relieved at the slight easing of his selection worries, which saw him have to put himself on the bench against Renfrew on Monday, alongside his assistant John Boyd and coach John Paul Dow.
It was hardly the best example of Greenock’s youth policy, with the three having a combined age of 121, but one or two of those missing on Monday should return this evening.
Skipper Tam Jamieson is back from suspension, although striker Allan Docherty still has one match of his ban to serve.
And Brendan Gillan comes back into the reckoning along with Jamie Cunning, both of whom were unavailable for Monday’s game.
However, Martin Orr has joined Thomas Docherty and David McGarrigle in having a premature end to his season. The young full-back suffered ligament damage in a tackle during the recent match against Yoker, and will be out of action for the next four to eight weeks.
But manager Campbell is still looking forward to tonight’s game.
He said: “In a way we have nothing to lose, so we would love to go out and put on a good performance and finish the league campaign on a high.” Kick-off at Guy’s Meadow Stadium is at 7pm.
Greenock Juniors are sponsored by SAVEHEAT, and the Lighthouse Bar.
