MORTON defender Jack Baird admits it was nice to get back on the scoresheet against Raith Rovers - but says he would have preferred three points over his goal.
The defender got on the scoresheet for the second time since making his return to the club in the summer by heading past Rovers goalkeeper Andrew McNeil to start the comeback in the 2-2 draw at Stark's Park.
It was the 26-year-old's first goal since the 5-0 win over Hamilton on October 8.
Baird says it was a good feeling to end his wait to find the net - but he would have exchanged his header for two more points on the night.
He told the Tele: "I am delighted with the goal. It has been a while since I scored. I scored against Hamilton right at the start of this run, so it's been a while.
"Obviously I couldn't really celebrate much as we just got one back after being 2-0 down, but it is not about that. I would swapped not scoring for us to win."
The centre back praised his side for their response in the match after falling two goals behind.
Baird believes the comeback epitomises the strong character they have displayed during their 10-game unbeaten run in the Championship.
He said: "We could have crumbled a bit, when we went 2-0 down there was a chance that could have happened.
"But there are a lot of strong boys and we fancy ourselves to score goals.
"We have scored some decent goals in other games. It wasn’t an ideal position to be in, but we were confident we could get out of it, even at 2-0. It shows good character.
"I can’t really remember but it has probably been a long time since we have been trailing in a game.
"It is good to get in the habit of winning and drawing and picking up points and keeping it going.
"It helps that we have gone nine unbeaten in the league before that."
The former Ayr United man stressed the importance of making sure they left Kirkcaldy with at least a point with Ian Murray’s side pressing to find a winner late on in the contest.
Baird said: "I wouldn’t say we were in control, but we had the better of the chances in the second half.
"In the last 10 minutes the home team tend to get on top of you a bit. Raith are decent from set pieces as well, and they put good balls in our box.
"We did well to stand up to it, and Brian [Schwake] made some great saves at the end.
"He has been brilliant for us, so we were happy to go up the road with a point."
With the game being Morton’s final match of 2022, they head into the new year in fourth place and just four points off the top of the Championship table.
Baird says they are delighted to be in the play-off positions heading into 2023 as they get ready for the second half of the season getting underway.
He added: "If somebody had said to us we would have 30 points after only half the games gone, we would have bitten their hand off, so we're delighted.
"We'll get ready to go again for another 18 games and we're looking forward to it."
