MORTON ace Lewis McGrattan says he couldn’t believe his luck after being awarded the club’s Young Player of the Year award after a stellar breakthrough season.
The 22-year-old midfielder from Port Glasgow admits that the thought of the personal accolade never even came across his mind as he made himself a mainstay in Dougie Imrie’s first team throughout the campaign.
McGrattan was brought into the team after Ton suffered a 5-1 thrashing against Partick Thistle in October and never looked back, ending the season as a key man.
He told the Tele: “It was really nice to get the award. You don't really think about things like that during the season.
“You focus on winning games and trying to be successful, so come the end of the season it’s nice to get a bit of recognition like that.
“I think I’ve broken into the team maybe a year later than maybe some thought I would, but there’s nothing wrong with that.
"I’ve been quite lucky to get my chance when I did.
“I came into the team after the defeat at Partick and it coincided with when we went on good run and I’ve managed to keep my place and get a really good number of minutes in the legs.
“It gave me the chance to settle into the groove of things and I’ve not really looked back.
“Its fair to say I’ve played a few positions over the course of the season and since I’ve come into the team.
“Being a winger isn’t really something I ever thought I’d be, or put much thought into.
"But I think that it suits me.
“I can’t complain about how much game time I’ve had over the course of the season, I’ve loved every bit of it.”
McGrattan is determined to make the most of the close season as he looks to get over the disappointment of missing out on the promotion play-offs.
He hopes his side can take heart from finishing as the form team in the league and build on it come the start of next season.
McGrattan told the Tele: “The season is always long and hard and the way it ended, let's be honest, was pretty gutting.
“It's good to be able to get the chance to reset and hopefully we can go again next year.
“I saw a stat that we’d taken the most points out of anyone in the last six games, so we can’t say that we didn’t give ourselves a chance.
"Now it is up to us have the bit between our teeth to take into next season."
