FORT Matilda Bowling Club enjoyed a successful start to their new season as scores turned out for their opening day.
Members and guests from the Renfrewshire Bowling Association, the Greenock and District association and other clubs from the local district packed out the Greenock club as the first bowls of 2024 were delivered.
President Mairi Mills opened proceedings by instructing her partner Neil Harris to deliver the first bowl, with Mr Harris striking the jack and drawing a loud response from onlookers.
The club decided to give the green a chance to dry out and opted not to play a full wapenshaw, however its committee arranged an afternoon tea which was enjoyed by those who came along.
Club secretary Norrie Mungin said: “The committee had however arranged a first-class afternoon tea enjoyed by all.
“Once again, we continue to thank our sponsors.
“Our membership both gents and ladies is continuing to grow.
“We continue to welcome anyone to come and try bowls before deciding to join the club."
Another busy season lies ahead for the club which will see both their men and women’s sections compete in several competitions.
The men’s section is set to compete in the Greenock and District’s triples league as well as the usual Renfrewshire Bowling Association tournaments.
Fort Matilda’s women will also compete in the Greenock and District’s local competition as well as the West of Scotland league.
The club plans to arrange men’s and women’s wapenshaws during the week throughout the playing season and will also hold its usual barbeque night this year.
And while everyone is enjoying competing and socialising, the club’s committee will also be looking ahead to the club’s centenary year in 2025.
