GOUROCK Bowling Club has got its new season off to a busy start after a fantastic opening day.

Around 40 members and guests came along recently to watch club president Alan Airth open the greens for the 2024 as his wife Carolyn delivered the first bowl of the new season.

The club’s packed schedule is now well underway, with a host of competitions, friendlies, community events and social activities planned.

Alan told the Telegraph that the club were excited for the season to come.

He said: “Things were a wee bit curtailed on opening day because of some drizzly weather but it didn’t dampen the fun or the enthusiasm.

“It’s been a busy wee start to the season so far and we haven’t even started on our numerous internal competitions yet.”

The club have also a number of friendly fixtures lined up, including games against Paisley-based club Abercorn and Cathcart Bowling Club in Glasgow.

Alan Added: “The friendlies are good fun, it’s not serious and you get to meet people you wouldn’t usually see.

“We also had our first fun night of the season last week too, basically what we do is that anyone who comes along and is wearing flat shoes can come out onto the green and try bowls.

“Then after that we go in and have bingo and a quiz. It’s just a good night to chill out and relax.

“A big thing for us is being into the community and doing stuff in the community.

“We’re trying to get across to people that we’re a bowling club, but people are always welcome to come along to our function nights and our cabaret nights.

“We’ve got the Wherries booked for August and our social convenor has been doing a great job of getting different bands and artists to come in on a monthly basis.

“It’s going to be a brilliant season.”
