AN AWARDS organiser has praised an Inverclyde sporting stalwart as 'irrepressible'.

Table tennis supremo Bobby Thomson, 91, featured in the People of Inverclyde in the Telegraph this week.

Good friend Chris Jewell, who helps who co-ordinates the Inverclyde Sports Personality of the year awards, said: "I have been friends with Bobby for many years and with his very good knowledge of sports clubs generally, as a result of him being a former member of the local sports council, Bobby has been invaluable in recent years about contacting clubs personally at the nomination stage of the Inverclyde Sports Personality awards to encourage nominations for these annual awards.

"Bobby himself has been a past winner of the Adult Volunteer category of these awards.

"Over many years Bobby has been tireless in promoting table tennis to young and older at clubs, sporting hubs, with Active schools and also a couple of ‘Come and Try’ sessions in the Oak Mall.

"His enthusiasm is both catching and irrepressible after all these years."
