DISAPPOINTED Morton skipper Grant Gillespie says that his side need to get over their League Cup woes by being ready to go against Partick Thistle in just over 10 days time.

Ton are effectively out of the cup, with one game remaining in Group F following Saturday's 2-0 defeat to the hands of St Johnstone but Gillespie feels as if there wasn't a great deal between the sides over the course of the 90-minutes.

And he wants to finish the section strongly this weekend against Alloa as the Cappielow side look to build some much needed momentum ahead of their William Hill Championship opener against Partick on August 3.

He told the Tele: "The group has been a bit disappointing from our point of view. To have lost two out of the three games isn't something we wanted to happen.

"After beating Brechin we thought we had a good chance to go up against St Johnstone and win three points.

"That's not taking away anything from St Johnstone, they're a great side with great experience but we felt that if we'd played to our full potential then we felt we could've got something from the game.

"Unfortunately that wasn't to be - although I didn't think that there was much in the game over the piece. Although they probably showed why they were a Premiership team.

"So I think we do need to try and take the positives from it and try to take the positives into Alloa next week, to finish the group strongly and take something into the beginning of the league campaign.

"Finishing with a win is going to be vitally important, you want to try and build some momentum as quickly as possible so the quicker you can do that the better.

"We've already played against Alloa this season, we know what they're about they're a good team.

"They won't come to Cappielow and let us have the three points so we'll need to be on our 'A-game' and put on a good performance as well as get a good win to take into the league.

"We know we're effectively out of the cup now so it's important that we look forward to the start of the league campaign."

Gillespie is one of the only players to have seen pretty much all of Dougie Imrie's tenure at the club as he enters his third season on Sinclair Street.

And he's looking forward to evolving into the new style of play that the Ton gaffer wants to enlist his side with. He thinks though, that a few rough edges will be polished off over the next few weeks as the squad continue to get up to speed.

He added: "It's been good. Obviously, it is slightly different from the last few seasons. Personally, as a midfielder it's really good because it means you're getting more touches on the ball.

"But I think with that the onus then comes down to us to realise when it's on to play like that and when it's not.

"But that'll come with games. Obviously, the League Cup campaign has been disappointing up to this point, but I don't think we've played that badly.

"Even in the East Fife game, there wasn't much in the game either, it was just about them taking chances when they came, which made the scoreline look worse.

"Even on Saturday, against St Johnstone I don't think we were that bad at all. The slight difference in quality was how we were separated."
