MORTON forward Lamar Reynolds says it was vital that his side gave themselves a platform to build on heading into the start of their William Hill Championship campaign by beating League One hopefuls Alloa.

Saturday’s 2-1 win meant that Dougie Imrie’s men finished a disappointing cup campaign with a bit of gloss as they finished fourth in Group F with six points out of a possible 12.

And 28-year-old Reynolds says his side obtained their objective by beating the Clackmannanshire side as they look to build up a head of steam in the opening weeks of the league campaign.

He told the Tele: “It was really important for us to go into the beginning of the league off the back of a win.

“The season starts on Saturday so the Alloa game was all about getting the win.

“It was about us getting on our feet, and getting some positivity that would’ve meant we’d go into the league campaign strong.

“We’ve managed to that which is brilliant for us to build from.”

Reynolds believes his side have shown great signs of progress since their last clash against The Wasps.

Both times saw Ton run out winners by a singular goal but he says his side imposed themselves more in the Premier Sports Cup tie as they went about their business in a professional manner.

Ton boss Dougie Imrie was disappointed as to how his side failed to manage the game, losing out on a clean sheet but Reynolds reckons those creases will be ironed out in the coming weeks.

He added: “We played Alloa in pre-season, in one of the friendlies and I think that if you were to compare the two games, from the friendly to the cup game it was completely different.

“I thought that we dominated the ball, for the majority of the game.

“Obviously, there was a few sloppy elements to the games but they’ll iron themselves out.”

The Jamaican forward reckons his side should’ve been quids-in with the chances created against a strong Alloa team.

But he reckons that the League One side are a good test for his side as they look to make the step up when facing off against Championship title hopefuls Partick this weekend.

He continued: “Respectfully of course, I thought we could’ve had four or five goals and it would’ve made the scoreline a bit more comfortable.

“Alloa are a good side who will do well in the league this season, they’re a good team to test yourself against.

“But we move, we’ll train hard this week and make sure that we’re more than ready enough for when we kick things off at Partick on Saturday.”
