SCOTT NEWMAN of Gourock Golf Club won the Greenock and District junior championship title for the second year running with a magnificent gross score of 71.

The championship has been running since 1953 and is held at the four Inverclyde golf clubs on a rota basis, with Whinhill Golf Club, which was presented in excellent condition, being the host club in 2024.

The competition is open to all Junior golfers, aged under 18 before January 1,2024, who are members of the golf clubs in the ‘Tail o’ the Bank’ area – Cowal, Gleddoch, Gourock, Greenock, Lochwinnoch, Port Glasgow, Skelmorlie and Whinhill.

The champion’s trophy is awarded to the winner of the scratch section, with Scott’s superb score earning him a three-shot margin of victory over Nathan Love of Greenock Golf Club.

Scott’s Gourock clubmate Kobi Phillips completed the scratch podium with a gross score of 85.

The handicap section was won by Greenock GC’s Connor McCrorey with a great net score of 69, playing off a handicap of 20.

He finished two clear of his Greenock clubmate Dean Black (6), with a third Greenock player, Alistair Kerr (38), taking third place on 72.

Meanwhile, the pre-handicap competition was also dominated by Greenock players, who filled the top five places on the leaderboard: Carlie Love emerged the winner on 26, with Daniel Finlay second on 30 and Calvin McCorkindale taking third place on 34.

Leo Patel on 40 and Ciaran McCorkindale with 42 completed the top five.
